SharanTDICarat Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 I am looking to do a service on my Sharan soon, and with all of my previous bikes and cars I was thinking of installing a K&N panel filter.Has anyone done this on a TDI model, and is there anything to some of the stories of failing MAF's due to fitting K&N's?. I have heard that the failures were due to over oiling the filters though! Thanks,TAM Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 Premature MAF failure is just one of the problems with K&N's! how exactly do they improve the air flow? the surface area of the filter hasnt changed nor has the size of the inlet trunking! so the only way the airflow has increased is by haveing bigger holes in the filter material! which defeats the object of haveing a filter :D Quote
Guest T120 Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 Nice one Vr6. :D Its the oil off the K&N thats wrecks the MAF. :D Have used K&N's on bikes and it does increase the air flow as you usualy have to increase the jet size if its normaly asperated, but the performance does increase. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 With most EFI sytems the ECU usually makes adjustments for minor alterations such as high performance filters and back boxes, I fitted a hyper pro filter kit on a neighbours Wildstar last weekend, the main reason for fitting it was to even out the rev range and remove a lot of the V twin lumpyness at low revs :D the 10% so called power increase is not noticeable if it's there at all? but it has smoothed out the ride according the owner :D Quote
Guest T120 Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Vr6Are you also into the more civilised transport of bikes as well? :o Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 In my youth I dabbled a bit with bikes, but the need for a car/van for work was greater and more pratical than trying to carry a three piece extension ladder and a pipe vice on a bike :D my neighbour is a born again biker! in the good weather he and few others dress in leather and tour round on big Japanese Harley look alikes :D I just walk past singing the old Village People song YMCA and asking them what time the Indian and Construction worker is turning up for the reunion :o I only ride a mountain bike now :D but I do get the urge to buy a bike again I fancy a RD350 LC a real hooligans bike :D Quote
GSMGuy Posted March 29, 2005 Report Posted March 29, 2005 Gotta comment, even though it's off topic - as had a sad departure at the weekend... My trusty (and bloody mint) '99 R1 was wheeled off to her new owner.... Only thing that will take away the pain, is my spankin K5 GSX-R 1000 when I pick (Suzy) up on Thurs!! :o Mike Quote
seatkid Posted March 30, 2005 Report Posted March 30, 2005 With most EFI sytems the ECU usually makes adjustments for minor alterations such as high performance filters and back boxes, ........... but it has smoothed out the ride according the owner :o :D I'm sure my engine is more responsive and smoother after fitting my free Sainsbury dangly air freshener..... It will make no difference on a VAG Tdi as fuelling and boost is ECU limited. The only difference maybe a few millisecond reduction in turbo wind up time and even earlier MAF failure. :D Quote
rick-curl Posted May 9, 2005 Report Posted May 9, 2005 Dear All, Probably a bit late but I've been running a K&N for the last 63,000 without a problem. My first MAF lasted 80,000 on paper filters so I'm not convinced that filtering is the absolute cause of premature failure. In my opinion, the engine does breath better at the top end, or at least it doesn't tail off like it did with the paper filter. I'm also now in credit in terms of this as a service item. Quote
